We all know a ‘really great guy.’ A father, brother, uncle, friend or work colleague, we’re instantly attracted to their noble heart. They’re kind. Respectful. Assertive yet tender and protecting. We feel good when we’re around them, safe and empowered. They harness their authentic masculine energy.
Yet in today’s high pressured, fast paced, target driven climate, this authentic masculine energy seems to have been lost. Inauthentic masculine energy now seems to be the norm, especially in business. Instead of protection there is control. Instead of respect, there is insensitivity. Instead of strategic decision-making, there is aggressive competition.
What I experience when working with many male dominated teams are a lot of ‘cocks on the table.’ It’s often why, as a woman, I’m brought in. This egotistical superiority and aggressive competition is extremely unhelpful and very bad for business.
When I see men ramping up the inauthentic masculine energy, it’s almost always a way to cover up their own fears, insecurities and feelings of vulnerability. It isn’t just that they’re being dishonest about how they really feel, more often than not, they’re completely oblivious to it. This lack of self awareness is having a huge impact on their state of mind. So we’re calling out the men. Not just to come forward and own their real feelings and emotions, but we’re also calling out the men creating barriers with their inauthentic masculine behaviour.
I must also point out that some woman in business have inauthentic masculine energy too. Rather than harness their authentic feminine energy to nurture and create, I see female business leaders trying to compete with men in inauthentic energy in order to gain respect, feel in control and set themselves on a level pegging.
Inauthentic masculine culture is stopping men from being real, owning their feelings and fulfilling their true potential. I very rarely come across authentic masculinity in business, but I know it’s out there. I see it fleetingly. And we need to nurture it. When men harness their authentic energy, they unconsciously invite those they interact with to do the same. When someone is being noble, kind and chivalrous, it’s difficult to be aggressive and egotistical.
Male leaders can create more supportive and productive work environments by being real. When people are fully supported to be themselves, they feel better, so they do better and the true potential of a company is unleashed.
